Sermon Manuscript: Galatians 5:1-15
Series: Why it Matters
Transformational Point: In Christ, we conform to neither the will of our culture nor religious institutions.
Galatians 5:1-15 (CSB)
1 For freedom, Christ set us free. Stand firm, then, and don't submit again to a yoke of slavery.
John 8:31-36 (CSB) (I'm going to read this all together)
31 Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, "If you continue in my word, you really are my disciples. 32 You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
33 "We are descendants of Abraham," they answered him, "and we have never been enslaved to anyone. How can you say, 'You will become free'?"
34 Jesus responded, "Truly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 A slave does not remain in the household forever, but a son does remain forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.
Galatians 5:2-5 (CSB)
2 Take note! I, Paul, am telling you that if you get yourselves circumcised, Christ will not benefit you at all. 4 You who are trying to be justified by the law are alienated from Christ; 5 For we eagerly await through the Spirit, by faith, the hope of righteousness.
Thinking you are going to get to heaven by any other means other than Jesus makes Jesus 100% useless.
Galatians 5:7-9 (CSB)
7 You were running well. Who prevented you from being persuaded regarding the truth? 8 This persuasion does not come from the one who calls you. 9 A little leaven leavens the whole batch of dough.
Identifying the Liar is needed to identify and address the lie.
John 8:44-46 (CSB)
44 You are of your father the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. 46 Who among you can convict me of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me?
Galatians 5:10-12 (CSB)
10 I myself am persuaded in the Lord you will not accept any other view. But whoever it is that is confusing you will pay the penalty. 11 Now brothers and sisters, if I still preach circumcision, why am I still persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished. 12 I wish those who are disturbing you might also let themselves be mutilated!
Point number 3 in your notes:
Only with Jesus can distance yourself from the liar.
Matthew 16:24-26 New Living Translation (NLT)
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. 25 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. 26 And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?
Galatians 5:13-15 (CSB)
13 For you were called to be free, brothers and sisters; only don't use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but serve one another through love. 14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one statement: Love your neighbor as yourself. 15 But if you bite and devour one another, watch out, or you will be consumed by one another.
God's Grace, and your freedom from the illness of our world, are not a license to sin.
Romans 5:20-21 (NLT)
20 God's law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were. But as people sinned more and more, God's wonderful grace became more abundant. 21 So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God's wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing with God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 6:1-3 (NLT)
6 Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace? 2 Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it? 3 Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death?
John 8:31-32 (CSB)
31 Then Jesus said . . ., "If you continue in my word, you really are my disciples. 32 You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
