Exodus 20:16 (NLT)
16 “You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.
Exodus 23:1-3 (NLT)
23 “You must not pass along false rumors. You must not cooperate with evil people by lying on the witness stand. 2b When you are called to testify in a dispute, do not be swayed by the crowd to twist justice. 3 And do not slant your testimony in favor of a person just because that person is poor.
When you lie, people believe you.
Proverbs 19:5 (NLT)
5 A false witness will not go unpunished,
nor will a liar escape.
Proverbs 25:18 (NLT)
18 Telling lies about others is as harmful as hitting them with an ax, wounding them with a sword, or shooting them with a sharp arrow.
When our witness becomes a lie, we are misrepresenting God.
Colossians 3:9-10 (NLT)
9 Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds. 10 Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.
The Dangers of Lies
Over time Lies become truth in culture.
Romans 1:18-27 (NLT)
18 But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness. 19 They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. 20 For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.
21 Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. 22 Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools.
24 So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies. 25 They traded the truth about God for a lie.
26 That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other. 27 And the men, instead of having normal sexual relations with women, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men, and as a result of this sin, they suffered within themselves the penalty they deserved.
God will never lie to you.
Proverbs 30:5 (NLT)
5 Every word of God proves true. He is a shield to all who come to him for protection.
Psalm 12:6 (NKJV)
6 The words of the Lord are pure words, Like silver tried in a furnace of earth, Purified seven times.
Hebrews 6:16-20 (NLT)
16 Now when people take an oath, they call on someone greater than themselves to hold them to it. And without any question that oath is binding. 17 God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind. 18 So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. 19 This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary. 20 Jesus has already gone in there for us. He has become our eternal High Priest.
