Jeremiah 25:1-7 (NIV)
The word came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah: 3 For twenty-three years . . . the word of the Lord has come to me and I have spoken to you again and again, but you have not listened.
4 And though the Lord has sent all his servants the prophets to you again and again, you have not listened or paid any attention. 5 They said, "Turn now, each of you, from your evil ways and your evil practices, and you can stay in the land the Lord gave to you and your ancestors for ever and ever. 6 Do not follow other gods to serve and worship them; do not arouse my anger with what your hands have made. Then I will not harm you." 7 "But you did not listen to me," declares the Lord, "and you have aroused my anger with what your hands have made, and you have brought harm to yourselves."
Before correction, God always gives clear warnings.
1 Kings 9:6-9 (NASB)
6 "But if you or your sons indeed turn away from following Me, and do not keep My commandments and My statutes which I have placed before you, but you go and serve other gods and worship them, 7 then I will cut Israel off from the land which I have given them, and the house which I have consecrated for My name, I will expel from My sight. So Israel will become a saying and an object of derision among all peoples. 8 And this house will become a heap of ruins; everyone who passes by it will be appalled and hiss and say, 'Why has the Lord done such a thing to this land and this house?' 9 And they will say, 'Because they abandoned the Lord their God, who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and they adopted other gods and worshiped and served them, for that reason the Lord has brought all this adversity on them.'"
Jeremiah 25 (NIV)
8 Therefore the Lord Almighty says this: "Because you have not listened to my words, 9 I will summon all the peoples of the north and my servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon," declares the Lord, "and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants and against all the surrounding nations. I will completely destroy them and make them an object of horror and scorn, and an everlasting ruin. 10 I will banish from them the sounds of joy and gladness, 11 This whole country will become a desolate wasteland, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon seventy years.
God always keeps His promises, and not all promises are joyful.
Jeremiah 25:12 (NASB)
12 'Then it will be when seventy years are completed I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation,' declares the Lord, 'for their wrongdoing, and the land of the Chaldeans; and I will make it an everlasting desolation.
God never leaves His children without hope, even after correction.
Jeremiah 29:1-10 (NIV)
29 This is the text of the letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the surviving elders among the exiles and to the priests, the prophets and all the other people Nebuchadnezzar had carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon.
3 It said: 4 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: 5 "Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. 6 Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease.
10 This is what the Lord says: "When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place.
Romans 8:28 (NIV)
28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
Isaiah 9:1-7 (NASB)
9 But there will be no more gloom for her who was in anguish. . . . but later on He will make it glorious,
2 The people who walk in darkness
Will see a great light;
Those who live in a dark land,
The light will shine on them.
6 For a Child will be born to us, a Son will be given to us;
And the government will rest on His shoulders;
And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
Christmas is God's promise fulfilled.
Jeremiah 29:11-14 (NASB)
11 For I know the plans that I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans for prosperity and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. 12 Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. 13 And you will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. 14 I will let Myself be found by you,' declares the Lord, 'and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you,' declares the Lord, 'and I will bring you back to the place from where I sent you into exile.'
