Sermon Manuscript: Matthew 7:1-6
Series: Untwisting Scripture
Title: God’s Job vs. Our Job
Date: 2/9/20
Location: Clearwater Elementary School
Transformational Point: Christians are not to judge, but rather to discern.
Matthew 7:1-6
7 “Do not judge so that you will not be judged. 2 For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and behold, the log is in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.
6 “Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.
Matthew 7:1-2 (NASB)
7 “Do not judge so that you will not be judged. 2 For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.
(1) Christians are not to do God’s job of condemning, but rather are to show God’s example by forgiving.
1 John 4:1–3
4 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God.
Matthew 5:7 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
James 4:12 (NASB)
12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and to destroy; but who are you who judge your neighbor?
Matthew 7:3-5 (NASB)
3 Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and behold, the log is in your own eye?
(2) Christians should always examine their own heart before examining the hearts of others.
Matthew 18:15-16 (NASB)
15 “If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother. 16 But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed.
Matthew 7:5 (NASB)
5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.
(3) As Christians, we have an obligation to help our brothers and sisters out of sin.
Matthew 7:6 (NASB)
6 “Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.
(4) Not everyone is going to be open to your witness about Jesus.
2 Peter 2:22 New Living Translation (NLT)
22 They prove the truth of this proverb: “A dog returns to its vomit.” And another says, “A washed pig returns to the mud.”
